How to run ChatGPT Ads: from account setup and campaign build to management. The steps for a clean start in the new advertising channel.
Running ChatGPT Ads comes down to five steps: set up the ad account, define goal and audience, build the campaign, set up measurement and optimize continuously. Because the channel is still young, there is little ready-made experience to lean on. That makes a clean, structured start all the more important, so your budget flows into usable data from the start instead of into expensive learning curves.
The first step is setting up the ad access. This includes a properly configured account, stored billing details and the connection to your website or shop for later measurement. This part in particular decides a lot: if tracking and approvals are right from the start, you save yourself costly corrections later. If something is off here, you measure the wrong numbers for weeks.
Before building an ad, you clarify what the campaign should achieve and who it should reach. In ChatGPT it pays to think in full questions rather than single search terms. Which buying and advisory questions does your audience ask? Which of them should your brand meaningfully connect to? These questions form the basis for the messages.
Now the actual campaign takes shape: ad messages, budget and bids. The message should answer the user’s question, not just promote your product. You set the budget so that you get meaningful data within a few weeks. Start with clear, distinct messages you can test against each other, rather than a single variant.
Without measurement, every campaign is flying blind. Set up conversion tracking so you can see which campaign brings which inquiries or sales. Only that turns pure spend into a manageable investment. Define beforehand what counts as a result for you: a purchase, an inquiry, a download.
After launch the real work begins. You watch which messages and audiences work, shift budget toward them and turn off what does not deliver. Over time you lower the cost per result and scale what pays off. This ongoing management is the part that decides between success and burned budget.
Before the first campaign runs, a few things should be in place: a website or landing page to send users to, a clear offer that fits the expected question, and the ability to measure inquiries or sales. Without a convincing goal behind the ad, even the best setup fizzles out. It pays to review the landing page critically before launch: does it answer exactly the question users arrive with from ChatGPT?
One important point at market launch: in Europe, access to ChatGPT Ads initially runs through OpenAI’s ads team as well as agency and technology partners, with open self-serve through the Ads Manager arriving later. For getting started that means: right now you usually enter the channel through a partner, not a freely accessible self-booking tool. How much budget to plan is covered in What do ChatGPT Ads cost?.
The most common mistakes are quickly named: putting too much budget too early on a single, untested message, starting without tracking, and then leaving the campaign to itself. Also typical is phrasing the ad too promotionally instead of answering the users’ question. Whoever instead starts small, tests several messages, measures cleanly and adjusts regularly avoids costly tuition and finds out faster what actually works.
If you do not want to set up these steps yourself, I handle setup, build and management end to end. Everything about it is on the ChatGPT Ads page.
